New studies by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and a BBC/British Medical Journal report are adding fuel to the debate on metal-on-metal hip implants. The MHRA yesterday updated its advice for patients that have MoM implants with large head diameters, recommending that they are monitored for the life of the implants. The advice is based on new clinical evidence that these patients risk suffering from complications. According to a British Medical Journal/BBC report that aired the same day, the risk of these implants have been known for a long time, especially at the companies that are selling them.

A blog post on medtechinsider discusses MHRA's advice and the British Medical Journal/BBC investigation in more detail.
