A Spanish matador who suffered a horrifying injury when the bull he was fighting gored him last October is set to return to the ring this Sunday, with the help of some orthopaedic implants.
Captured in a graphic video posted on YouTube (warning, it’s tough to watch) the bull’s horn pierced Juan José Padilla’s lower jaw and exited through his left eye socket. He suffered eye, bone, muscle, and skin damage, though doctors were able to repair parts of the bones in his face using titanium plates and mesh during a five-hour surgery, according to the Belfast Telegraph. A nerve was also severed, leaving Padilla with facial paralysis, some of which was alleviated through a second surgery, as the Daily Mail reported.
Padilla now wears an eye patch and still can’t chew food, but this weekend he plans to make good on his vow to return to bullfighting, according to the New York Times.
