Exactech (Gainesville, FL) has acquired several spine product lines from VertiFlex Inc., a company that developes minimally invasive and motion preserving spinal surgery devices. In May, the company acquired Brighton Partners, a supplier of knee implants, in a $5.5 million cash deal. This most recent acquisition fits in well with the company's current spine product portfolio, according to senior vice president Bruce Thompson.
One of the acquired products includes the Silverbolt MIS Fusion platform, which offers a new approach to minimally invasive spinal surgery. During the procedure, the rod is delivered into the pedicle screws in one step, without additional incisions. The device design also provides precise alignment in difficult L5-S1 cases.
"With these additions to our portfolio, Exactech becomes one of the few companies in the spine industry with products implanted through a surgical approach designed to reduce the length of hospital stays and shorten overall patient rehabilitation times," says Thompson, who is also the general manager of the spine division.
The deal also allows VertiFlex to concentrate 100% of its efforts on its Superion interspinous spacer.
