Touch-enabled 3-D modeling technology is pushing the boundaries in helping patients and wounded soldiers who need custom facial prosthetics and custom dental and maxillofacial implants.

Developed by Sensable, the Freeform 3-D modeling and design system generates files from CT or MRI scans, which are used to create more accurate 3-D models in as fast as one week. In addition to craniofacial implants, the technology has been used to create implants that correct congenital deformities or restore speaking, breathing, or eating functions in cancer patients who have had sections of their palates removed.

At this year’s American Association of Maxillofacial Prosthetics annual conference, speakers from military medical centers in the United States discussed how they’re using the technology to make custom implants and prostheses.
